Is it worth reupholstering my chair?

Updated: Mar 22

Most people who approach an upholsterer will have been asking themselves this question and the answer is nearly always a resounding yes! Your beloved chair will not only be carefully restored but will be as good as new, having been stripped back to the original frame with all new stuffings and materials, handcrafted to last you for decades. It will also be a bespoke item, as you will have chosen the fabric, trim and style of the chair, so it will be completely unique to you.

I appreciate for most, the question of reupholstering is based on a financial decision and want to know how much will it cost to reupholster a chair and if it’s worth spending the money?

In a throw away culture where 22 million pieces of furniture in the uk alone are thrown into landfill each year, retaining and investing in a quality piece of furniture, is definitely worth considering.

For some, the cost of reupholstering can seem more than expected, however the amount of time taken by a professional upholsterer is often not considered when a quote is provided. It can take several days to strip a chair back to its frame, removing every single tack and staple, before adding the webbing, hessian, springs, stuffings, wool felt, calico, needled felt and top fabric, which can take days and even weeks, with the upholsterer charging a moderate hourly rate after years of training and experience. If you’re a traditional upholsterer, you’ll also be using the original or sustainable materials which have to be shaped painstakingly with an upholstery needle, but will last indefinitely compared to many foams.

Furniture mass produced can often be cheaply made, but still expensive which won't usually last as long as an upholstered item, so having a chair upholstered will ensure that you enjoy your chair for a lifetime.
